Is there any way to get AFDC or something for my son when his dad has not paid childsupport?
Q. I was told that in order to get AFDC(aid for families with deoendant children) that I had to apply for all kids in the household, not just the one whos dad does not pay child support. I don't want to have any kind of welfare, but I need more money for my son. He is 13 and wants to get new clothes for middle school and play sports but that all costs money. I have 2 other children..not by same useless dad, but they have support. My son's dad has a case for social security and Child support can't do anything with my case until his case goes through. Why can't they put him in jail? He claims he does not make any money, he works and gets paid under the table so they have no idea. I heard that if his SS case goes through...he may not have to pay… [cont.]

A. Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC) no longer exists. It was replaced by the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) program in the late 90s. That was Clinton's welfare reform. There are many differences. Most notably, eligibility requirements are MUCH more strict, and families can remain on the program for only a MAXIMUM of five years, lifetieme. You can get more info at

AFDC block grant--effect on neighboring states with differences?
Q. What might be the effect of having very different welfare programs in neighboring states be now that states are free to put forth welfare programs in whatever form they want? (This is with the AFDC having block grants from the 104th Congress.)
Asked by _ - Mon Sep 17 23:29:36 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. There won't be much effect. People don't usually move to a state just for it's welfare benefits. States with higher benefits often have higher costs of living so it all tends ot even out in terms of the absolute value of services provided. Poor people have very limited mobility.

A. Why does she need welfare? Is she too lazy to go out and look for a job? I have two jobs and I don't want to be supporting some able-bodied teen-ager who thinks she's entitled to a government check every month. Tell her to join the military; at least then she'll be earning her government check.

A. Food Stamps, Work First, Aid to the Disabled (state vs Social Security Disability), OAA (old age assistance), child care supplements, Medicaid. Some people also consider things like QMB (qualifying medical Benefits where the state helps pay Medicare premiums) as Welfare. In general if it is help that comes through the dept of social services it is considered welfare. The exception might be PUP funds and similar programs with other names intended to help a parent or guardian and a child who has been abused get into a safe living arrangement.

Were you aware that in 1995, an estimated $1.13 billion in AFDC and food stamp benefits went to illegals?
Q. In fiscal year 1995, an estimated $1.13 billion $700 million under the AFDC(Aid to Families With Dependent Children) program and $430 million in Food Stamp benefits was provided to households in which either the head of household or his or her spouse was an illegal alien. These benefits were provided to illegal alien parents for the well-being of their U.S. citizen children. The payments represent about 3% of total AFDC benefit costs and about 2% of total Food Stamp benefit costs.Approximately 153,000 AFDC households with 300,000 citizen children and 224,000 Food Stamp households with 428,000 citizen children had an illegal alien as the head of household or spouse of the head of household. Voice your opinion against rewarding illegals for breaking the law. Send everyone you know to this petition. I would put the exact link to the site here, but yahoo is blocking that. The idea of rewarding illegals who broke the law with a path to citizenship is ridiculous. Our government is a worthless disgrace.

Q. I applied for social security benefits and can't work. I am having a really hard time keeping a roof over my kids heads. I contacted my local dss and they won't tell me if i qualify or not without without me applying first.

A. Are you disabled? That is how you would qualify for SSI - for food stamps and AFDC you can have little to no income to qualify. And for AFDC you can't be getting any child support for your children. If you need help then put in the application! That is what it is there for. If you are capable of working and just haven't found a job you can and should get help until you get back on your feet. If you are disabled and can not work then use the services.

Are the United States close to becoming the worlds largest orphanage?
Q. For many kids, the government (not the parents) provides prenatal care, postnatal care, Headstart programs, school breakfasts, school lunches, after school programs, section-8 housing, AFDC income, WIC (milk, eggs and cheese), medical insurance, and grants for college. With the government doing so much, are these kids "defacto" orphans with biological adult roommates? Mr. Niceguy...like many of your sort...you don't answer the question. Don't worry, I understand why.

A. I believe that there are some people out there that need help and I do not want to deny them that but there are also those who are able to work and do more to support their family but chose not to because the alternative of the government doing it is easier. I just can't believe how times have changed. When I was growing up people were too proud to except charity - they just worked harder and went without some things. It seems that we are getting closer to a socialist government everyday. I guess I feel that if you make the choice to have children that you should be prepared to financially care for them and not continually rely on outside help. I understand that people fall on hard times and need help. That help should be short… [cont.]

Does the color of Obama's skin have anything to do with questions that insinuate that he will boost welfare?
Q. He hasn't proposed any such boost to AFDC or any other such welfare programs, yet I see tons of people running scared that he will rob from the rich and give to the poor. Obama has talked about efforts to reduce energy costs by eliminating tax cuts for the oil industry, as well as opening up higher education by increasing programs like AmeriCorps, but I wouldn't call those ideas welfare.

A. No, the perception that he will boost welfare comes from being a Democrat. I would expect the same from Kerry, Edwards, Kennedy, Clinton, Pelosi, etc. Democrats love social programs and Republicans believe in earning what you get.

How much are AFDC Cash benefits and food stamps in L.A. for a mom and one child? Also how long does it take?
Q. I would also like to know how long it takes to receive the benefits. My unemployment will be exhausted in a few weeks and I need to plan ahead. Will they allow me to apply while I am still receiving unemployment? I have gone from making $60,000.00 a year to nothing. I plan to try to get AFDC and also get some training for the medical field. I appreciate any and all advice and information. Thanks so much. My daughter's dad is between jobs as well but he does try to help out as much as he can. He gives between $100-$200 a month for Child Support. I just had to cancel my little girls health insurance because it was $87 a month. They are sending me information on a low income program for her though. Thanks so much for caring. I… [cont.]

A. Dependent on how much you are receiving in unemployment you may or may not be eligible for cash as those income guidelines are fairly low. For food stamps again it is also dependent on how much you are receiving. But for AFDC they can take up to 45 days to grant/deny your case and for the food stamp program it can take up to 30 days.
