From Middle English welth (“‘happiness, prosperity’”), alteration (due to similar words in -th: compare helth (“‘health’”)) of wele (“‘wealth, well-being, weal’”), from Old English wela (“‘wealth, prosperity’”), from Proto-Germanic *wilēn, *wala-, *wula- (“‘well-being, prosperity’”), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (“‘good, best’”). Cognate with Old Saxon welo (“‘weal’”), Old High German wela, wola (German Wohl), “‘weal, well-being’”), Danish vel (“‘weal, welfare’”). More at weal, well.
