From Middle English welth (“happiness, prosperity”), alteration (due to similar words in -th: compare helth (“health”)) of wele (“wealth, well-being, weal”), from Old English wela (“wealth, prosperity”), from Proto-Germanic *wilēn, *wala-, *wula- (“well-being, prosperity”), from Proto-Indo-European *wel- (“good, best”). Cognate with Old Saxon welo (“weal”), Old High German wela, wola (German Wohl, “weal, well-being”), Danish vel (“weal, welfare”). More at weal, well.
