Didn’t Get Your Stimulus Check? What You Need to Know

In case you haven’t been paying attention, the $600 stimulus payments that were approved late last year haven’t been delivered without their fair share of issues. First of all, we should note how it’s good news how quickly the Treasury Department began dispersing the checks after the stimulus bill was signed into law by President Trump. With tens of millions of Americans in dire need of that money, acting swiftly was the right move.

However, issues in delivery have been well documented. Perhaps the most egregious were reports that the IRS accidentally sent stimulus payments to the incorrect bank accounts of many consumers. Specifically, rather than sending them to the consumers themselves, many were sent to the tax preparers – TurboTax and H&R Block – that filed consumers’ 2019 income taxes. That error has been reportedly fixed, which is good news.

But what if you received your stimulus check and it wasn’t the amount that you were expecting? There’s a process in place where you can recoup any additional funds you were entitled to, however, the IRS recommends that you wait to claim it until you file your 2020 taxes. Let’s take a look at the steps to take to snag a rebate credit on stimulus dollars you didn’t receive.

First, you’ll want to make sure that you are indeed entitled to more stimulus funds. This round of stimulus checks worked similarly to the payout from last spring in that those with an annual gross income of $75,000 or less – or joint gross income of $150,000 – were entitled to the full amount. The checks are based on 2019 income, however, if you’ve had a child since then or experienced a change in income within this time, then you may be eligible for the rebate.

So what can you do to prove your eligibility? If you’ve had a child, providing his/her social security number and birth certificate should be enough to prove you’re eligible for the rebate credit on your taxes. You can also prove your 2020 income based on the earnings that you report. However, if you were shorted on your stimulus payment, things may get a bit trickier. You may recall receiving Notice 1444 last spring from the Treasury Department, which detailed how much you were entitled to. If you kept it, that should be enough proof to receive a rebate credit. If you did not, go through your bank account to find the sum that was deposited.

While it may be frustrating to wait to receive any additional funds until you file your taxes, keep in mind that you’ll receive a rebate credit after you do. This essentially means that your refund will get larger by whatever amount you were shorted or what you owe will decrease by this amount.

  1. I am on Social Security and received the first stimulus check on April 15, 2020. I to this date have still not received the second stimulus check. It was automatically deposited into my checking account in April. I have the same checking account and still have not received the latest stimulus.

    1. I am in the same situation as Dennis above, I rec’d my April 2020 check, but have not received my 2021 check. Charles A Carter

    2. I have not received my second check, either. I didn’t pay taxes automatically but got a check in April, just not one now. My daughter and her husband got theirs more then a month ago!! Don’t know why I haven’t gotten it yet??

    3. I got my first check in the mail……..that’s it nothing more, plus I’m on Social Security, my daughter got her second check and the last one was deposited in her checking account??? her husband didn’t get a second check or the third check either??

  2. Both my sons are incarcerated and both filed the 2019 1040 EIP form but neither one has recieved the $1200 stimulus payment

  3. Through a “Get my payment” link on the IRS site, my check was set to me mailed to my on Jan. 6, but I haven’t recieved it. Also, my first check in April was directly deposited. I dont understand why it was supposedly mailed.this time. Either way, I haven’t recieved it, and my Unemployment is also in limbo, nothing coming in. I wonder if the members of Congress are experiencing any loss on their end! Goodness, I do hope they survive this!

    1. Thank the Democrats. They blame everything on Trump. Lets blame the Demoncrats this time. All lies-No action if its something to benefit the American people!

      1. true and polosi blackmailed Trump to get her pork before she would allow any money to those Americans suffering! Trump said just before he left that she promised him if he gave her the “pork” she would let the people have their checks……………that was Friday before he left…………..When will we realize the demorats LIE WHILE SHE opens her $20,000 refrigerator to get out her $13 pint of ice cream…………..no, I am wrong, I am pretty sure she does not wait on herself, Probably has a china spy working for her like Swallwel and Feinstein did for 20 years!

    1. probably on to something there, John, I am a proud Republican and I am on ss and got both the $1299 and $600 deposited into my account where my ss goes. as did my husband in a different bank than mine………..Oh, silly me, the marxist socialist demorats are in charge now (kinda slipped my mind about the stolen election !! Trump had to give Polosi bitch a lot of her “pork ” in order for her to agree to give the American people their stimulus checks. then He left and see what happened………………………….This is only the beginning, in my humble opinion…..(trying to figure out how and where i can get a job to support husband (disabled)and myself once they steal our Social Security checks to pay for the criminals and illegal aliens they are inviting across our boarder, (ps the wall is already paid for and they won’t even let them finish it.not to mention the pipeline……sorry……so disgusted!

      1. sorry, typo it was $1200 and $600 not $1299
Anyone know where i can get a job in Florida to support my disabled husband and myself, (also disabled, real bad back etc) Worrying what we can do when the socialist/communist joe china and company steal our social security checks to pay for the illegals and criminals they are inviting into OUR COUNTRY! (PS Im 74 and worked really hard until 66 years old. Still smart, and can walk on my own, just can’t stand for long periods of time and can’t lift a lot of weight or climb anymore

  4. I have not rec’d my stimulus check. I changed banks in the fall of2020 I am not having a problem with my SS check being deposited in my new bank but, no stimulus check.

    1. Same here had bank change in fall, ss checks come to new bank . When checked it said that check arrived at bank on the 4th to old bank account.

  5. My husband and i have not yet received ours yet , we got our first one direct deposit with no issue but have not received the new one as yet , AND every time i go to the” get my payment ” it tells me my informaton doesnt match theirs , HELLO i KNOW our ss #’s and our address and its the same damn ones i used when I did our taxes for the past 20 years !!!!

    1. Same thing happening to me. I received the first stimulus but not the second. Nothing has changed. I go to the IRS site and it tells me the info does not match.

  6. Received no 2nd stimulus check, only the first one…was told I did not make enough to file fed taxes…is that why I was overlooked for 2nd check?

  7. My husband and myself have not received our stimulus checks yet! Last year it was mailed to us! We are both retired! I checked the Get my payment and it said it was mailed Jan 6th but we have not received them yet!

  8. I have not received my stimulus check, i think it is because the irs has not yet processed my 2019 1040 taxes nor sent my 2019 refund even though I mailed the1040 on Mar 26, 2020

  9. I did not receive my second check either.we my wife have direct deposit. But the wife got hers in the mail,i did not get one either way.

  10. So many of us have not received our mailed checks yet even though they were sent out seven days ago. I am wondering if there is an irs site to notify them of non-receipt. Not sure if it’s the USPS or the IRS. Either way, there should be a notification icon to let them know we haven’t received our check(s). Just in case someone else has stolen them from the mail and/or fraudulently deposited in a wrong account. Just saying!

  11. We have not received our second check either. Ours too said it was mailed on the 6th. Does the Post Office have a problem?

  12. I too am waiting for my stimulus check but I’m not holding my breath. $600 is fine but it’s not near enough to help many folks. Basically all the stimulus check are doing is making the politicians feel good.

  13. How do I trace my check that was returned from old bank to IRS
Have not received second check that was delivered to old bank on Jan 4th.
    Thank you

  14. I bet the sentors andchousecgot tgeire God forbid. If they didn’t get they need it but hell with life Americans

  15. My wife and I received our first stimulus not in our bank account but in the mail.
My wife received a debit card for the second stimulus but I haven’t received mine in card or check or bank deposit
so where is my stimulus the IRS don’t know.

  16. Like many of the post above, I still have not received my stimulus check either. I received the 1st stimulus check which was deposited directly into my account. However, when I checked “Get My Payment “, it stated it would be mailed out on January 6th. I don’t know why it was a direct deposit for the 1st stimulus check, and I’m being told it would be mailed for the 2nd stimulus check. To date, I still have not received a check.

    1. My husband and I have not received the second stimulus either. We got the first one deposited and now it’s saying they will be mailed on January 6. No checks

  17. It seems there are a lot of people with the same issue. My brother, 73, received his $600 stimulus check around the the first week of January. I am on disability and got my first round check no problem…still have not gotten my second. I think there is something other than a minor glitch happening here. I tried the “Get my Check” app and it would tell me anything…it said they have no information….this was last week.

  18. I did not receive my second stimulus payment either. I did receive the first, like most of us. The second payment was not sent the same way they did the first payment. My first payment was sent same way via SSI (retirement) account info. The second payment the government sent to info on my income tax return, which had a bank account attached to the return, which is no longer my bank account. So, since it was sent to a bank account that I no longer have, I have no idea where that money went/is. This is happening to a lot of people that needed that pitiful amount sent. This was supposed to help Americans not delay. Poorly administrated. I guess June or July would be a good time to help Americans.

  19. I also checked the web site, said it was mailed on the 6th of January. Still not received.
Great work IRS and government lackeys.
I wonder if Congress and senate didn’t receive their income if things would run a little more efficiently.

  20. I or my wife have not received our checks, could it be because I live in California or is our government that messed up. I get by on SS and don’t file taxes, could this be the problem?

  21. With all due respect to Americans, some of you Americans need to go back to school. Your English grammar stinks!!

  22. We have not received our check either. In the spring last year ,we got that one and it was direct deposited. So where is this one ? My sister and cousin got theirs so did .my next door neighbor. How can the government do this,we really was relying on it.

  23. We did not receive the second stimulus check of $600. Neither my husband or myself? When I went on the (get my payment) it said it was sent Jan 6th. yet we never received them! We are both retired and we’re looking forward to the assistance?
