How to Create Products Customers Love

Last week I spoke to you about recessions being one of the BEST times to start that online business you’ve always dreamed of.  Many of today’s most successful businesses were started during recessions and depressions. I hoped my article showed you how you can be successful by taking advantage of these economic rough times.

If you’ve decided that NOW is the time to start your own online business you might be wondering what are some of the first steps you should take. The first step is deciding what you have to offer that customers need. In other words what products can you sell them?

This is a crucial first step because this will be the area which will decide if your business is successful or a failure. If you create products people want then your business will thrive, but if you create products that are uninteresting and don’t help anyone then your business is destined to fail.

So how do you create successful products that everyone wants? Follow my formula and you’ll be bringing in the big bucks in no time at all.

First off, stick to what you know. If you’re a hairdresser sell accessories or information about hair care, not food products. Use the skills you acquired in your work experience before you decided to start your own business to build your first products. You’re an expert in your field; show your audience what you know.

Secondly, make sure the product you create solves a problem. I’m sure you’ve heard these words before but they are important enough to repeat. Nobody will buy your product if it won’t help solve a problem they have. For example you don’t see anybody selling how to videos on how to connect to the internet or turn on a TV. We all know how to do that. However you do see lots of products about how to make money on the internet, how to create online businesses because that’s something not everyone knows how to do. It’s a problem for people and they want information on how to solve it. It’s also helpful if you approach your product from the problem solving standpoint. It will make your product flow better and easier to understand.

Moreover, make sure you know who you’re solving the problem for. Ask yourself who would buy this product? Is it for newbies or experts? Those are two completely different audiences and thus two completely different products. If you struggle with this question choose newbies, they are a much larger customer base in nearly every industry.  It’s not good to target a broad range of people. Your sales copy for the product will become muddled with attempts to appeal to everyone. Instead choose a specific group of people in an industry. Choose nurses instead of all people in the health care industry. Choose people who want to lose 10-30 pounds instead of everyone who wants to lose weight. You’ll find the narrower your audience is, the easier it is to sell your product.

When you begin creating your product, your thoughts will inevitably turn to packaging and deliverability. There are many options for this. You can have a download only product or a physical product that you need to mail to a customer. My rule of thumb when creating a new product is to keep the costs as cheap as possible, no matter how sure I am the product will be a success. You don’t need an overly designed product. Don’t spend thousands on a graphic designer, video production team, embellished cases to hold CD’s and DVD’s.  Test the idea for your product first then spend the money to develop physical copies. And when you know you can spend the money to create a product keeping the design simple is still something to strive for. It saves money too!

When deciding how to package and deliver your product you must take into account the price point at which you plan to sell your product. Is this going to be a low priced product that you use to introduce yourself to a new market? Or a back end product that you sell to people who are already familiar with you? Design a product with a price point in mind. In other words don’t write an e-book and expect to get hundreds of dollars for it as a backend. Those are cheap to produce so use e-books as front end pieces to get leads.

If you struggle with coming up with an idea for a product, remember you don’t need to reinvent the wheel. Check out what other businesses in your desired industry are selling and then rip off their products.  Well, not exactly. Buy some products from a few different competitors and then use some of the general ideas. It’s plagiarism to steal exact words and products. Instead take the good parts and make them your own. If you are thinking about publishing information about how to create and sell website templates (a hot topic right now) then look at how someone else did the product. Look at how they delivered the information, what price they sold it for, who they are targeting, and what information they included. When you create your version just make sure you add more than your competitors so customers have a reason to buy yours.

Whatever you do make sure you your product provides more value and quality information than a customer pays for it. Customers today are savvy shoppers and will shop around until they find the best deal. You don’t have to undercut yourself, but you do need to stand out from the crowd. Start your online business by creating quality products that customers need.

Good luck!
