Who’s Hiring? The Businesses Hiring During Coronavirus

Many people have been laid off in the wake of coronavirus. Non-essential businesses are shutdown in most locations. But that doesn’t mean that no one’s hiring.

Essential businesses are hiring in droves, and that’s where people need to look for work. It’s also where people may want to look for their next investments.

Here are some of the large companies that want to boost their staff to handle the demands the global pandemic has placed upon all of us.

Amazon

Amazon is hiring for 100,000 jobs, and perhaps most importantly, some of them are online. Most of the businesses hiring in the wake of coronavirus are in-person jobs, and that does mean that employees may be at the “front line.” But Amazon is hiring for online positions too, which is an excellent opportunity for people who are currently self-quarantining or otherwise sheltering at home.

CVS

It’s perhaps not surprising that CVS is looking to hire 50,000 more people. CVS is, after all, a pharmacy, and it’s been mostly plundered for things like hand sanitizer in the past few weeks. CVS needs everything from distribution center work to store associates, and it’s currently conducting virtual job interviews and virtual job fairs to bring people in.

Dominos (and Other Delivery Chains)

Dominos is going to be hiring 10,000 more employees while Papa John’s is going to be hiring 20,000. People who don’t want to cook and don’t want to pay expensive delivery fees are getting pizza for takeout. In recent weeks, many pizza companies have been offering deals, and they have remained an essential restaurant service—while many other smaller restaurants and chains have fallen by the wayside.

Instacart

This personal shopping app is hiring 300,000 more workers to fulfill orders. Instacart allows people to order from nearby grocery stores, with personal shoppers picking up their items, and delivery drivers taking them straight to homes and businesses. As people no longer want to leave their houses, Instacart is starting to pick up the slack for a lot of grocery stores. And instead of purchasing an expensive meal from DoorDash or similar, people are instead looking for groceries. Of course, most Instacart employees are independent contractors, so mileage may vary.

Walmart (and Other Retail Chains)

Grocery stores are booming right now, and many are hiring temporary labor. Walmart itself will be hiring 150,000 associates from now until the end of May, to compensate for their increased volume. Not only are people going to the grocery store to stock up, but they’re cooking at home more frequently rather than going out. And there are more people asking for delivery and pickup services, which means there are more people needed to pick and stock.

Most of these businesses are only hiring temporarily; these are temp jobs, not permanent jobs. Still, for many laid off employees, it may benefit them to look at these businesses first. These are likely to be the businesses that come out most unscathed from the coronavirus.
